Mercury Chlorine Cell Services

Mercury chlorine cells have been reliably producing chlorine and caustic soda for over 100 years. Where high quality salt-fee caustic soda was desired, mercury cells have previously been the technology of choice throughout the world. Most of the chlorine in Europe and the Third World is produced using mercury cells.

Presently, however, mercury cells are at a crossroad. The product quality from membrane cells is equivalent and the energy consumption is better than from mercury cells. The environmental concerns in handling large quantities of mercury are also problematic. It is expected that mercury cells will be phased out within the next few decades. Andritz Automation is standing by to assist the mercury cell operator either by getting the most benefit from the remaining life of the mercury based process or assisting with conversion to membrane cells.

Andritz Automation's personnel have operated, managed, and supported this technology for in excess of 35 years. We have developed specialized tools to assist the mercury cell operator. These tools and our generalized services are outlined below:

Specialized Mercury Cell Systems and Tools

  • Electrode Monitoring and Control System, EMACS: The largest cost factor in the production of chlorine is the consumption of electric energy. Mercury cells have the unique ability to control this consumption by the adjustment of the gap between the anode and the cathode. While plants have traditionally had such systems in place for several years, the Andritz Automation EMACS system is unique in the type of non-contact sensor that is used. This system is less prone to failure or erroneous readings and can be readily adapted as an upgrade to existing systems. Use of more modern control systems and plant interfacing can enhance reliability of old systems and get the best performance out of aging plants.
  • Mercury Recovery System, REMERC: The reduction of mercury emissions in waste water and sludge are important aspects of mercury cell operation. Mercury recovery systems from solids are usually thermally based. Universal Dynamics' EPA recognized non-thermal based REMERC process is very unique and offers a less expensive alternative for this application.

Process Optimization

We are internationally known experts in all aspects of operation of a mercury cell plant. Published papers and further information are available by clicking on the links.

  • Brine Treatment: Brine quality is paramount in the proper operation of a mercury cell plant. Even impurities at part per billion levels can adversely affect operation. Andritz Automation can optimize the brine system for reliable production.
  • Chlorine Handling: The prevention of corrosion from wet chlorine and the safe compression, liquefaction, and shipping practices are all essential in any type of chlorine plant. Andritz Automation has decades of experience in this area.
  • Caustic Soda Filtration: While no evaporator is needed to concentrate mercury cell caustic soda, proper filtration for mercury removal is crucial. Andritz Automation can help implement these techniques.
  • Safety and Environmental Compliance: Andritz Automation's personnel have won many governmental awards for safety and environmental compliance projects.
